This Mexican Genre Is Taking Over The Globe Right Now!

Mexican Music Is Having a Global Moment Right Now! 2023 saw an explosion for many different genres of Mexican Music, specifically Corridos Tumbados. It caught my attention when I learned that La Diabla by Xavi (a Corrido Tumbado song) was the #1 trending global music video in January 2024 (now #16) and has, at the moment, over 275 million views on YouTube. This Associated Press article states that Mexican music has grown over 400% on Spotify within the last five years, with 50-60% of its listeners being under the age of 30. This is a new global movement that is exciting to see, especially since it brings not only live instrumentation and musicianship back to the forefront, but the rich heritage of Mexican music.

In May, Splice’s John Smythe (Diaspora Label Lead) flew to Dallas and recorded two volumes of sample packs called “Camino Tumbado”. Camino Tumbado is a series of sample packs featuring both traditional and creative expressions of Tumbado. Corridos Tumbados have long been an iconic sound in Regional Mexican music. Produced by Diego Barba and Jose Olide, recorded at Valve Studios in Dallas Texas. Here is the story behind the pack.
