Our Interview With Tokyo Machine
Q: Tell us about yourself – what led you to production and creating samples?
TM: I wanted to send out samples into the wild and see what other artists could come up with. My favorite part of music is walking outside and hearing people listening to records I worked on. It warms my heart hearing people welcoming my music or sounds into the community. It’s amazing to know that something I created is reaching people, whether they’re vibing to it or using it in their own projects.
Music is all about sharing. Sharing a sound, sharing a story, sharing a memory. It’s not just about creating, but also about connecting with others through those creations. Seeing how my sounds inspire and fit into other people's work is the most rewarding part of it all.
Q: What inspired the sounds included in this sample pack?
TM: I love balancing production for a song to ensure it fits naturally in both the world of live shows and digital. I’ve had a fortunate career where my songs can be used on my tours and for platforms like Spotify, TikTok, and video games. I wanted to create sounds that work just as well in front of a live crowd as they do in playlists and gaming soundtracks, and to create a sample pack that can empower artists to take their music on the road while also helping them grow on digital platforms.
he sounds are inspired by what I’m hearing in video games, clubs, and random things I find online. I love listening to Playstation and Sega Dreamcast songs and comparing them to what I hear at underground bass shows. It’s fascinating how gaming and bass music both evoke such intense energy and atmosphere. I’m always shocked with how much those worlds have in common sonically and wanted to create a pack that captures that synergy.
Q: What do you hope the Splice community will do with their sounds?
TM: My career really took off once I had access to quality samples and recordings. Those tools were a game-changer for me, and I hope artists are able to use these sounds to similarly grow! Make the next hit, create the next video game soundtrack, score your next memory. I want these samples to help spark new ideas and give others the tools to push their music to new heights. Share them with the world.
Q: Do you have any advice for other musicians who are striving to move into the world of sample creation?
TM: Spend time developing your own sound. Put thought into how to stick out and feel unique. It’s about finding your own voice and making it stand out. Don’t just copy the current big songs. Listen and be inspired by newer and younger producers that are creating the next wave of music. Stay curious and explore fresh sounds from all over the music world. Even when you use other people’s samples, put your own twist on them to bring your personality and story into the song.
