Spatial Audio

Taking a journey inside the music

When reflecting on this pack, Jonathan Rowden said, “The concept of composing music in a virtual environment is the thing that struck me the most. Not just capturing a natural, spherical recording of an environment, but creating spaces that never existed before, where the music is a natural part of the world (as it should). Being inside the music, having it swim around you changes the way we listen, react, and create.”

He added, “Virtual reality may be on its move towards the mainstream, but why hasn’t the sound changed? Music and sound could be there tomorrow if we wanted it to be. The tools for creation are available. The methods for listening are as simple as a pair of headphones. Spatial audio and its many sisters in XR have the capability to fundamentally transform human sound-experience to be deeper, more thoughtful, more sensory. Spatial listening is just the beginning. I think we’re ready to take the leap.”

And the world is beginning to catch on. TIME magazine did an immersive feature of Martin Luther King JR. that included spatial audio, and most recently Bjork released her VR album full of spatial audio. We hope you enjoy this first step into a new way of listening.
