Only a handful of the Turkish oğur saz exists in the world today. Erkan Oğur designed and derived the oğur saz as a six-stringed kopuz inspired by three instruments: 1) the three-stringed kopuz, 2) a lute that was played in the Baroque, early Renaissance, and Renaissance period, and 3) the classical guitar.
With a history that dates back to 6000 BC, the kopuz was thought of as a sacred instrument by the societies it belonged to. It has been played in the region ever since, evolving as music evolved with more strings and frets added with time while nomads transitioned into a settled lifestyle.
