Great singing can crumble language barriers, make genre lines and cultural differences unimportant, and inspire others to do things they never imagined. A good voice with the right melody can express the joys and jeers our lives in a way that feels otherworldly, but more truthful that anything we can express ourselves. Great singing can change the way we look at the world.
Jarell Perry is a great singer. You know this because you can feel this. His unique and characterful way of vocalizing somehow grabs the gut, and his performances help us forget our troubles or figure out how to confront them. So we knew we needed to document it our way: with a sample pack.
We captured his incredible voice with an Avedis Audio Ma5 pre-amp and a favorite Bock 47 with a kiss of compression from a CL1B at Aura Studios in Brooklyn, then we layered and processed some of it with VocalSynth and left other bits raw. The pack that came from it is one of our favorites, full of emotional, epiphanic vocal lines, heartfelt harmonies, and melodies you could use in any production, from soulful downtempo and R&B to hip hop and Sunday-morning pageants.
