Portlandia was a smash hit TV show for a reason. People across generations love to reflect and glorify the ‘90s. Maybe the decade deserves all of that glory. Or, perhaps it’s easier to reflect on the past as ‘simpler times.’ One thing is sure: the ‘90s were an epic time for music. Not just chart-toppers, either. The indie scene, sound design, and soundtracks all turned a corner.
Electronic artists were finding their way with synths, hip hop artists were shaping culture forever, guitar-based rock bands were breaking away from top-40 expectations, singer-songwriters were not holding back. The best part was, they were all floating in the same atmosphere, sharing the MTV spotlight. The mold was broken and artists were seeing how far they could push themselves within their own artistic integrity.
