Nick Paul has been staying creative in quarantine. Making this pack was an exercise in transporting himself in time. He drew from personal experiences like listening to busted tapes on his way to high school and learning how to build harmony while training in jazz music.
He harnessed those experiences while experimenting with some of his favorite gear and techniques. The drums are a mix of live playing through tape (mostly a TEAC model A-3440) and sampling drum machines such as the Roland TR-808, Vermona DRM1, and Oberheim DMX.
Almost all sounds in this pack were recorded through a mixture of API 512c and Neve 1073 preamps. A lot of the compression you hear across the board was created with an API 2500, which Paul says “is amazing at dealing with drums and stereo mixes.” He used a UA 1176 for the mono signals that need a little bite. To get specific sounds to drift and detune, he used the TASCAM Porta Two Ministudio 4-Track Cassette Recorder. He said, “recording into it and back to the DAW is a real nice texture for getting sounds to sound lo-fi."
Other instruments used in this pack include the MiniMoog, Korg MS20, Prophet 08, Juno 106, Roland SH101, Mason Hamlin Piano, Fender Strat, Fender P Bass, Wurlitzer 200A, and Mellotron.
