An arpeggio (or arp) is a sequence of notes taken from a particular musical scale like C major, played one after the other. They usually follow distinct chord patterns, such as a major triad, repeating the sequence many times so the pattern becomes quickly familiar. Creating these patterns using a synthesizer can establish an ‘80s space-age sound perfect for sci-fi, a la the Stranger Things soundtrack. Or, a haunting melody ideal for horror scores, much like the “Halloween Main Title Track” by John Carpenter. These minimal synth patterns build suspense and create a distinct mood. And all you need is a digital synth (like Splice’s Astra) and a DAW.
In your synth plugin, choose a chord you like in a key of your choosing to create a pattern. In the arp section of your synth, use the arrows to move it up, down, back, forth. Layer on some FX and tinker with it until the pattern starts forming your desired effect. This is a great way to start a synthwave track.
