Ian Chang has the ability to transport you to another universe with sound. A purveyor of avant-garde electronic music, he’s a master of getting a professional drum beat from literally anything. But nothing is done without thought and precision. He builds unique, layered sounds from unusually modified drum kits and found objects. The samples in this pack will add texture to anything from hip hop to juke to drum and bass, and beyond.
For Obtuse Rhythms, Chang played a variety of rhythms on his pancake drum kit without resonant heads, removing a layer of perceived control. The result is a unique sound best described as “otherworldly but accessible”. He thoughtfully prepared his kit with paper, tin foil, and other noise-making elements to produce these sounds. He also recorded a myriad of odd percussion sounds with found objects such as bags of chips, granola, kids toys, and percussion instruments from all over the world.
Chang is a drummer for Son Lux, Matthew Dear, Body Language, and many others. He also has his own avant-garde experimental electronic beat project under his own name, where he performs using Sun House Percussion unit.
The microphone setup consisted of an AKG D112 on the kick, Sm7 and C3000 on the snare, two AKG C414 overheads, a vintage Neumann u87 FOK, RE20 on the floor tom, 421 on the rack tom, and a Bock 47 mono overhead - all through class A 1073 style preamps.
