Rhythmic Grains with Braille

Featured story

Braille wants to help you craft dynamic, living, breathing soundscapes

Many sound designers love using granular synthesis for its range and flexibility. It enables the creation of dynamic, living, breathing soundscapes that can transport the listener into whatever universe they want or the one in which is intended by the producer.

Granular synthesis can feel like as much of a technological experiment as it does a method of music production. The process includes splitting recorded audio into small pieces called grains. Multiple grains are then layered on top of each other and typically played at different speeds, phases, volume, frequency, or arrangements.

We worked with Praveen Sharma (known as Braille) to craft the Rhythmic Grains pack for creators looking to craft unique and interesting sound design. It's for those who want to experiment with new sounds and push beyond any preconceived musical boundaries.

Granular synthesis is an amazing and powerful sonic tool but extracting usable sounds from the potential chaos can be daunting. Braille lets you skip the line with this pack straight to the front of a new sonic frontier.

Sharma has always taken a genre-absorbing, dance floor-oriented approach to his output as Braille, effortlessly floating through house, techno, melancholic ambient, and UK bass. With an ear for sentimental melodies and an unprecedented step into the vocal arena, Braille’s first full-length demonstrated his ability to step outside the dance floor box.

The source material was constructed using a variety of software (Output Portal, Paul Stretch, The Mangle, Granite, Max MSP, Crusher-X) and hardware (Tasty Chips GR-1, BASTL Thyme, Waldorf Quantum, Prophet 6, Prophet 12, Rhodes, Piano, TR-808, Elektron Analog Rytm).

We look forward to hearing the soundscapes and other projects you create using the Rhythmic Grains sample pack.
