'Thundergod' is quite the illustrious nickname to earn from fans as a percussionist. But Brian Rosenworcel is a legend deserving of such a designation.
Originally from West Hartford Connecticut, Rosenworcel helped form the band Guster in the 1990s at Tufts University. As the band's percussionist, he's known for being the only rhythmic element. Unique among many alternative bands at the time, for years, he played all the percussion instruments by hand and originally didn't perform on a standard drum kit. He single-handedly ran the band's rhythm section with a combination of bongos, congas, djembe, hand snares, and cymbals, creating an organic foundation for the harmonies the band is known for. He later began alternating between the hand percussion and drum kit.
For this Splice Originals session at The Bridge NYC, Rosenworcel brought in a library of odd percussion and skin drums such as congas, bongos, djembes, and darbuka. We layered the percussion to create loops that are primed and ready for your beats. The auxiliary percussion instruments included kalimbas, bells, slide whistles, a marvin bell, claves, shakers, krins, tambourines, and a ton of other odd hard-to-find pieces. We included one-shots to add an extra layer of versatility to give you room to play with these unique sounds. These samples were recorded on AKG c414s and AEA R84's through Neve 1073 preamps.
