After creating numerous genre-specific sample packs for Sunday Supply, Jimmy Q wanted to produce a project that truly identifies through a mood or feeling more than a specific style of music. Each songstarter has a sentimental, nostalgic sound that could be used in a variety of genres and includes production techniques that span across multiple eras from the '70s to the '80s and through the '90s.
When it came to creating this collection, Jimmy Q shared, "I like to blend live musicianship, the use of analog processing/gear, and old-school chopping sampling techniques with modern production tools like digital VSTs and plugins. While I have a foot set firmly in classic sounds/processing, adding a mix of digital VSTs and plugins helps push each sample forward for the 21st century. This brings on a familiar, yet nostalgic sound that is perfect for Daze of Nostalgia."
Included are live saxophones, various analog and digital synthesizers (Casio MT-68, Korg MicroKORG, and Omnisphere), soulful keys and pianos (Mellotron & digital VSTs), reel-to-reel tape processing on each songstarter (TEAC A-2000R), and a bunch of chopped and re-sampled loops.
In terms of honing in on moods and feelings, Jimmy Q drew influence for the songstarter foundations from Daryl Hall & John Oates, Marvin Gaye, Phil Collins, and Whitney Houston. The 20+ songstarters were then chopped using sampling techniques by 1990s-2000s hip hop producers like J Dilla, Pete Rock, No I.D., and Kanye West.
In terms of how to use these sounds, Jimmy Q says "any producer who’s looking to accomplish a soulful, nostalgic sound in their production should look no further. Producers can find their favorite songstarter and use each of the individual loops/stems to create different variations of the original sound for a more interesting arrangement."
